Biochar is a charcoal soil amendment that keeps soil airy and holds water and nutrients near the roots. Here is how it works, how it differs from grilling charcoal, and how to use it.
Quick summary
- Biochar is wood charcoal made with little oxygen, used to improve soil structure. It is not a fertilizer.
- Its pores keep soil airy, drain well and hold moisture and nutrients near the roots.
- Use about 1 part biochar to 9 parts soil (around 10%) and soak it before use.
- It does not break down easily, so one application lasts a long time.
What is biochar?
Biochar is charcoal made by heating wood or other plant material with little air. The result is full of tiny pores that act like a sponge for water, air and nutrients. KINGBE biochar is made from 100% mangrove wood, carbonized and graded at our own factory, with no binders or lighter fluid.
Biochar vs. grilling charcoal
Do not put grilling briquettes in your soil. Some briquettes contain binders or ignition aids, and grill ash is highly alkaline. Biochar for plants should be pure wood charcoal, graded by size, with nothing added.
How to use it in 3 steps
1. Soak overnight
Use plain water or diluted liquid fertilizer so the charcoal does not pull nutrients from the soil at first.
2. Mix 1 : 9
1 part biochar to 9 parts potting soil, mixed evenly.
3. Plant and water
Care for your plants as usual and keep your fertilizer routine.
Which size to choose
Good to know
- Start at about 10% of the soil volume and do not exceed 20%.
- Biochar is not a fertilizer. Keep feeding your plants as usual.
- Charcoal is slightly alkaline. Use less for acid-loving plants.
- Wear a mask when pouring dry charcoal to avoid dust.
FAQ
Can biochar replace fertilizer?
No. Biochar improves soil structure and helps it hold water and nutrients, but plants still need fertilizer.
Do I need to soak it first?
Yes. Dry charcoal absorbs water and nutrients from the soil at first. Soaking overnight avoids this.
How much should I use?
About 1 part biochar to 9 parts soil.
