Charcoal has long been used to grow orchids in Thailand because it is airy, drains fast and does not rot. Here is how to pick the right size and plant with it.

Quick summary
  • Orchids with aerial roots need an airy, fast-drying medium. Charcoal fits.
  • For 3-6 inch pots, use 2-3 cm chunks (KINGBE No.3).
  • Rinse and soak the charcoal before planting.
  • Charcoal does not rot, so you repot less often than with organic media.

Why orchids like charcoal

  • Fast drainage keeps water off the roots and reduces root rot.
  • Good airflow between chunks lets roots breathe.
  • No rotting, so it lasts several growing cycles.
  • Roots grip the rough surface, keeping the plant upright.
