Charcoal has long been used to grow orchids in Thailand because it is airy, drains fast and does not rot. Here is how to pick the right size and plant with it.
Quick summary
- Orchids with aerial roots need an airy, fast-drying medium. Charcoal fits.
- For 3-6 inch pots, use 2-3 cm chunks (KINGBE No.3).
- Rinse and soak the charcoal before planting.
- Charcoal does not rot, so you repot less often than with organic media.
Why orchids like charcoal
- Fast drainage keeps water off the roots and reduces root rot.
- Good airflow between chunks lets roots breathe.
- No rotting, so it lasts several growing cycles.
- Roots grip the rough surface, keeping the plant upright.
Match the size to the pot
- 3-6 inch pots, mature plants: 2-3 cm chunks (No.3) for Dendrobium, Cattleya, Oncidium.
- Seedlings, pots under 3 inches: 5-15 mm flakes (No.2).
- Drainage layer for other plants: 2-3 cm of No.3 at the bottom of the pot.
Planting in 3 steps
1. Rinse and soak
Wash off the dust and soak overnight.
2. Place and fill
Spread the roots and fill charcoal around the base. Do not pack it tight.
3. Water and feed
Charcoal has no nutrients, so keep your orchid fertilizer routine.
How often should I replace the charcoal?
Charcoal does not rot. Replace it when the plant outgrows the pot or salts and algae build up.
Can I mix charcoal with coconut husk?
Yes. Mixing helps the medium hold moisture longer in dry spots.
